Sample

A water quality sample: from a site, at a particular time.

Attribute Type Required? Description
samplePointCode xsd:string optional Reference code/identifier for the sample site, as known by the person/organisation sending the file.
samplePointName sp:SamplePointList required Name of the sample point, e.g. "New Town STW - Pipe 3". Note that this must match the list agreed in this schema.
ngr NgrType optional National Grid Reference for sample site, in UK Ordnance Survey format e.g. 'TQ12348765'.
date xsd:date required Sample date.
time xsd:time optional Time of sample. Is this optional?
material MaterialType optional Type of material comprimising the sample. Note that this should be required (and is required by CSM) but is not exported into the EA WIMS ascii file so must remain optional in this schema.
incomplete xsd:boolean optional Flag indicating that not all of the determinand results are avaiable yet for this sample. If this attribute is missing, the sample is assumed to be complete.
labReference xsd:string optional Reference code of the sample, as used by the laboratory that analysed the sample.
labName xsd:string optional Name of the laboratory that analysed the sample.
purpose PurposeType optional The purpose for which the sample was taken.
mechanism MechanismType optional The method used to take the sample.
pointType SamplePointType optional Standard set of sampling point types.
analysisMethod xsd:string optional Method of analysis used to obtain the result.
fieldMeasurement xsd:boolean optional Flag indicating that the sample is from a field measurement.
fieldInstrumentType xsd:string optional Type of instruement used to take field measurement.
dissolved xsd:boolean optional Indicates analysis from a "Dissolved" sample, rather than a "Total" sample.
permitNumber xsd:string optional Reference number of active licence or permit.
samplerName xsd:string optional Name of person who took the sample.
samplingEquipment xsd:string optional Equipment used to take the sample. Is this not the same as fieldInstrument?
depth xsd:float optional Depth at which the sample was taken.
depthUnits DepthUnitsType optional Units for the depth measurement, e.g. "mAOD" = metres Above Ordnance Datum.
purgedVolume xsd:float optional Volume removed from the borehole prior to sampling in litres.
sampleDuration xsd:time optional Time spent sampling, e.g. 00:10:00 = 10 minutes for a gas sample.
crossSectionArea xsd:float optional Area of the emmission stack at the sampling point in square metres.
analysisDate xsd:date optional Date sample was analysed in the lab.
analysisTime xsd:time optional Time sample was analysed in the lab.

Determinand

Aspect of water quality that has been measured and it's value, e.g. pH = 7.7, Ammonia (as N) = 13mg/l

units UnitsType required Units of measurement for the sample.
flag xsd:string optional Flag indicating whether sample has contravened a threshold/limit.
qualifier QualifierType optional Notice that determinand is greater than/less than this value (rather than a precise measurement).
uncertainty xsd:float optional Uncertianty in the result (in the same units as the value).
percentageUncertainty xsd:float optional Uncertianty in the result expressed as a percentage of the value.
